Gissa Job Mister, continued,,,,

My apologies for not updating this sooner but I have been a bit busy with the dreaded OFSTED visiting the Newington School, more of that later perhaps.

Again many thanks for the continuing messages of support and encouragement and also for the many tales of woe that have reached my ears, I have ensured that these have been passed on to James Purnell the Minister responsible for these matters, I will post any feedback from him here at some point. I can hear some of you saying “well why don’t you use your connections to get a job?. I suppose I could if I was that way inclined but in my view that is no better than some of the more sleazy things that Politicians of all Parties do to further their own ends. If I find another job I want it to be because of me and my skills and abilities (or lack of them) not because of the fact that I am on nodding terms with some of the so called great and good of this Island.

Anyway I had to ‘sign on’ last Tuesday and duly attended at the appointed time and place. For those of you who fortunate enough not to have had this experience it is a steep learning curve. On arrival you are met by a greeter who takes your collection of forms from you and a gorilla in a Group 4 uniform who tells you to ‘take a seat’ with a vague wave of the hand in the general direction of some seats, nearby is a sort of podium thing that contains the electronic job board. While doing the uniquely English thing of queuing you are expected to look through this list of available jobs. There are a series of touch screens to follow and in theory you should arrive at something suited to your talents or preferences. I wont dwell on the fact that I arrived at a list of jobs for children’s nursery assistants, despite the fact that as a Grandfather of 7 and I am probably uniquely qualified to keep children constructively occupied for several hours I don’t have the bit of paper that says I can so that was a non starter, ironically as I am a School Governor I have been List 99 checked so met at least 50% of the criteria. Also there were several jobs that were described as ‘driving’ I am assuming that from the descriptions attached to those that weren’t specific about being a delivery driver were private hire/ hackney carriage driving jobs.

Having been there, done that, and had my own taxi company I didn’t fancy that at my age, it’s a young mans game. Another really helpful fact was that the White Van Man jobs were all out of the area. So after dutifully browsing the jobs I took a seat in the area indicated and started reading my Thanet Times, starting with the sports pages then the front page then the inside pages and oh I suppose I had better look at the jobs page as well, during this my peaceful reverie was frequently interrupted by a hatch being opened and a name being called followed by people going up to the hatch and receiving wads of cash! It seems that I was sitting in the area reserved for folks getting crisis loans, as I was sitting up taking notice of what was going on around me I could hear a voice calling out my name in the distance so I got up and went to investigate, as I walked round the screen I was met with a sea of desks with privacy screens around them but couldn’t see anyone standing calling my name. Undeterred I started to approach all the empty ones to see who had summoned me, eventually I found the right person who very snottily told me that I had been sitting in the wrong place and she was just about to mark me as ‘absent’, resisting the temptation to tell her exactly what I thought I politely pointed out that I was sitting where the gorilla in the Group 4 uniform had told me to sit but I would know better next time and also know my place. I also thought better of telling her that she had called me 20 minutes late. And so to the signing on ceremony, I was asked a series of questions about what I had done to find work and asked to produce my documented proof, she seemed a bit surprised that I had copies of a couple of letters and emails I had sent to various employers also a copy of what passes for my CV to show as proof. This all seemed to satisfy her and she completed the necessary paperwork and instructed me to attend in a fortnights time and I got the feeling I was being dismissed, not so fast Missus, I want something from you now !! As I have got a couple of payment protection insurances in case I couldn’t work for some reason, I needed something called an ABI 1, well actually I needed four, so I politely asked her for four copies of this form, the look I got had to be seen to be believed, with extreme bad grace she manually filled in four of these forms and threw them across the desk at me. By now I was very pi55ed off with this bints attitude and told her that next time I expected to be seen on time and treated with respect as per the Customer Charter, I also told her that without folks like me she would be out of a job. I am still debating whether to write a strong letter of complaint to the Job Centre Manager, copied to my MP and James Purnell.

It remains to be seen whether she has marked my file ‘Troublemaker’ or maybe I just caught her on a bad day.

Mike interested to know how you feel about the mayoral election now Dave Green seems to have come out in favour, we all know what Malcolm is like, so it’s very likely to become a reality now.

In view of your current predicament I believe it’s a well paid job.

So lets see how long it will take you to recieve your fortnightly pittance and indeed if you get the correct amount on the correct day - If you do i for one will be surprised. Mind you, its nowhere near a bank holiday, so you might just get lucky.

Just removed your double posting Anon 16.32, and yes I wait with trepidation firstly to see if I am actually going to get anything, they still havnt told me after 10 days, so thats another target missed and secondly if as you say its on the right day and into the correct bank account!

Michael,
I have mixed feelings about an elected Mayor not least of which is will we do away with the other three Mayors in Thanet? As you may know I have thought for years that three Mayors in a tiny District like ours it is a ridiculous situation. My PERSONAL view is that on balance I think that provided the right person was elected it would probably be a good thing.
Of course the unseemly scramble and divisive wrangling that would go on within the Parties may not be such a good thing.

Make sure you complain about this woman! I must admit that during my years on & off (currently off) the dole, most of the staff at Margate jobcentre were extremely friendly & courteous, but just once I felt I had reason to complain about a person's attitude, & this was I feel dealt with in a satisfactory manner after my written complaint.

New to bloggs and starting to like them.

I think signing on should be how you have described it, it should be difficult, however bad manners and rudeness is wrong.

Do a nice letter of complaint

I think the attitude you describe is pervasive across the public sector, precisely because they know they've got a job for life and sacking any of them would take a mountain of paperwork so why bother.

When Gordon's chickens come home to roost in a few years time it will be a different kettle of fish however - great swathes of of timeserving public sector jobsworths out on the street :-)

Probably not the Jobcentre ones though :-(

Mike, a dismal tale of bad manners from Job Centre staff. Have you asked about any posts available at Thanet Earth that we were assured would be offering 550 new jobs to Thanet or was it all 'double-dutch'?

When I signed on some time ago I found the staff seemed to change the rules each time I signed on. I eventually got my benefit stopped because I'd been doing voluntary work that didn't in any way stop me from applying for a job.

I got a piece of paper flung at me across the counter, with a curt,'benefit stopped. Next!!'

Ironically, I was far better qualified than any of these 'inky clerks' working behind the counter but you can't beat the system, if you're honest. Had I never mentioned my voluntary work I'd have had my benefit over Christmas.

Mike, how are they coping with the fact you get an allowance as a councillor? That'll confuse them.

Cllr. Mike Harrison said...

What appears to confuse them is the fact that I am an ELECTED Member of the Council and as such I dont actually WORK for the Council, of course different agencies have different rules, as I receive an allowance the Tax people deem that as WAGES and deduct tax and National Insurance from me accordingly. The rules on voluntary work are as clear as mud, as I filled the form in with the assistance of an Officer on my first visit, incidently her attitude was completly different to the one I experienced on Tuesday, I explained about being a Councillor and her opinion was that it was voluntary work and as such wouldnt count against my application for JSA. Only time will tell, I do however feel a Tribunal coming on,,,,,,,,,,,,,

I have no problem with paying Tax and NI on any income I get but I do think that rules should be consistent across all Government Agencies. Another good example is the number of hours used to calculate full time employment, some agencies use 10 some use 12 some use 16 some use 20 and some use 24, small wonder then that many millions of different benefits goes unclaimed by people perfectly entiteled to claim but get confused by the multitude of different rules

Mike this thing with government employees is quite ridiculous I encounter many who are charming properly qualified and experienced and who do their job very well and those that aren’t and don’t. As a member of the public that pays them there doesn’t seem to be any way that those who are bad can be got rid of or properly trained, I don’t think complaints go anywhere.

With the mayoral election any chance you could sound out some of the other councillors quite a few I have spoken to seem to be coming round to the idea and I am wondering if there are enough to vote for a petition?

Mike - What do you know about the comment posted on Tony Flaig's site "And have you heard the one about the Labour mayor who refused to attend a grievance hearing brought by the Leaders wife, where he was accused of so many accounts of bullying and harassment that her union didn't know where to start with the complaint?

How come that one never got in the local rag, or brought the Labour politically correct brigade out in force?

One rule for them, and another for everyone else? Or perhaps the Leader's wife doesn't matter?

No wonder there was a fracas at the Mayors Ball".

Who is this about, and surely there can't be any substance to it?
