Comments on the previous post, the current rows in football and the Stephen Lawrence trial have set me thinking about prejudice and bigotry generally. Particularly the reference to the comments made by Dianne Abbot. While her comment is quite true about divide and conquer as it has long been accepted that if you divide various factions the group that stays together will ultimately win following the unity is strength principal.
Prejudice and bigotry along with intolerance take many forms and most people will have suffered to a greater or lesser extent, for example remarks about someone’s weight can be just as hurtful as a remark about their race or sexuality. Equally a remark about Tourettes aimed at a political opponent may not hurt the recipient but will be offensive to sufferers and their relations. In todays world we have to be so careful about what we say and to who we say it as it may be taken the wrong way.
Racism is not the preserve of white people against black it takes many forms, apart from the N word in relation to black people we have many other derogatory terms for the French, Germans, Spanish, Portugese, Italians, Irish, Welsh, Scots, Asians and any other group who do not conform to our rigid view of ‘normal’. Equally other cultures have the same attitude to other cultures. My son lives in West Ealing and a walk along the Uxbridge Road demonstrates how one culture shuns others, there are clearly defined sections for the various national shops selling a variety of goods from their home countries. Personally my wife and I love it, a whole variety of different foods and clothes to try and enjoy. These folks also choose to live together in clusters, groups, enclaves or ghetto’s depending on your point of view.
Before anyone starts jumping up and down and starts complaining about foreigners coming here and refusing to live as we do let us look at Brits abroad, if you go to a lot of countries you will find expats living in the same area, opening shops and bars selling British goods, not bothering to learn even the basics of the language. A lot of these people have emigrated saying that the country is not ours anymore with all the foreigners living here now. They in fact are no better than those they seek to criticize.
The purpose of all this is to encourage everyone to try and live their lives in a less judgmental and more tolerant way accepting that everyone is different and that we should be tolerant and celebrate those differences rather than thinking that our narrow definition of normal is the only way.
I can do no better than paraphrase Martin Luther King who said : ‘I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin, but by the content of their character’.
‘By the content of their character.’
‘I have a dream that my children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by their race, colour, creed, religion, sexuality, illness or appearance but by the content of their character’.
It is a great shame that, nearly half a century later, people like Abbott and Cameron still seem to fail to understand this simplest of statements.

Very reasoned and sensible analysis of the problem, but it is almost impossible to stop human beings forming clans or tribes and being more comfortable amongst those they regard as of the same clan or tribe.
Perhaps we may reach a state where different clans stop insulting each other, but I think much more than that is wishful thinking. Think of a TDC, Mike, where the left and right stop shouting at each other and they are largely all the same colour, give or take the odd spot of tanning lotion.
Or just maybe oneday I might be able to walk down the Falls Road waving a union jack or wear a tri-colour sweatshirt in Carrickfergus.
You can lead a man to water but you can't make him love it to corrupt an old saying.
I notice that few people (including yourself Mike) include ageism amongst the list, in particular against the young. I still find it unbelievable that a person under 21 can legally get paid a lower wage for doing exactly the same work as anyone else. Imagine if this was the same situation for the elderly / disabled / gay / ethin minorites / etc..
Peter, ageism is a whole debate on its own, discrimination against young or old is endemic as well, however one of the reasons younger people are paid less is that employers pay more for knowledge and experience. For example you are an experienced doorman therefore you have both the knowledge and experience to deal with awkward customers whereas a younger person doesnt. Producing left handed grommit woblers in a factory where everyone does the same job and produces the same amount is a different matter.
Tom,, having met various Tories from up and down the country at different seminars, courses and other gatherings I can tell you that North Thanet Tories are reviled and despised by Associations all around the country as being 'the worst sort of Tory that give our Party an bad name' most of these people are folks I can have a perfectly normal, polite relationship with, political differences aside, unlike a great many Councillors from North Thanet who seem to delight in an eruption of bile, vitriol and abuse as soon as someone dares to contradict them.
Frankly that excuse doesn't wash Mike. As a 49 year old I could walk into a minimum wage job tomorrow & get paid the same as everyone else despite being a complete beginner, whereas there could also be someone there who started at 16 & has been there nearly 5 years but get paid less. Of course, the reason few (if any) politicians bother to challenge this is because there's no votes in it.
Mike, I think you misunderstood me, probably deliberately, but I seem to recall meetings until recently where Labour members engaged in hostile and noisy rhetoric towards those then in charge. My point was simply that if people can disagree so venomously simply over political difference what chance of a love in when you add other factors like race, religion and culture.
Like I said, you can legislate to stop people calling each other abusive names but you cannot force them to love each other.
By the way, I am not a North Thanet Conservative.
Still can't bring yourself to condemn Diane Abbott can you?
Diane Abbott is not as bad as Brian Goowin because unlike him she did not name a victim
No she engaged in stereotyping a whole racial group, the very thing she accuses others of on many occasions. She is also a Shadow Minister and should set a much better example.
Tom Clarke appears to be a closet racist as well as a closet homophobe
Late night finger trouble again I see, Anon. How does pointing out Diane Abbott's racism make me a closet racist or are we only allowed to point out racism when in one direction.
Tom Clarke, you're right, it doesn't. But I bet the comment about you is right, though.
Based on what evidence? There is actually nothing closet about me at all and what you see and read is what you get.
So you're quite open about your racism and homophobia then. Well I guess that's something.
0836 you are a wanker
08:36 Your insults would have more impact if you had the guts to say who you are. At least then I could sue you and ask you to prove such allegations in court.
Until you do and in the meantime, I endorse the comment of 10:06, you are a complete gutless wanker!
Tom Clarke, you, are also "gutless", by your own definition and standards, since you also operate behind a veil of anonymity. Who is "Tom Clarke"? And I don't think you can slander or libel a fictitious character. Your Anti-Worrow Campaign Leader, Moores, has said that in the past. And he, like you, is a self-proclaimed expert on all things...
And incidentally, I have accused you of nothing. I have merely followed the "logic" of this thread.
Oh, and an afterthought...
Again, your language shows the bilious, nasty side of the political right. It's good to know you can always rely on some things!
The one thing you are most definitely not, 0812, is logical. Predictably, yes, but following threads, you must be having a laugh.
At you, Tom-boy, always.
At you, Tom-boy, always.
Hopefully not is all I can say to your last comment. Not my scene at all, old fruit.
